You Can Now Audition for The Voice in Decentraland

Remember when auditioning for a singing competition show meant sweating in long lines, conversing with strangers and a lot of anxiety? If you like singing competition shows but are fed up with the process, you’re in luck. Starting today, The Voice Studios is launching a new way for fans to audition for the show: In the metaverse.

In addition to auditioning for The Voice, fans will be able to create their own music, test music knowledge through games, show off their dancing skills, and compete in “battles” with other singers.

If successful, The Voice Studios has the potential to transform the landscape of singing competition shows as we currently know and understand them. Its creation also presents an opportunity to reimagine how we think about traditional television shows as a whole and offers a glimpse at what programming could look like with a new angle of fan and viewer interactivity.

“Entertainment has changed dramatically over the last 15 years. In fact, it’s so broken there’s a writer strike now that shut down Hollywood,” Justin Hochberg, Virtual Brand Group chief executive officer, said in an email. “VBG is building the next generation of distribution and a way for fans to connect to their favorite characters and stories. It’s that simple. And it’s that powerful.”

Utilizing the newly created NBC metaverse fan zone, fans will also be able to win virtual clothing and other prizes, all housed within Decentraland’s Vegas City.

In launching The Voice Studios, Virtual Brand Group and ITV Studios hope to continue the success of The Voice in the metaverse, building on their pop-up event at last year’s Decentraland Metaverse Music Festival. If fans take advantage of the new way to audition and interact with the show virtually, it could signal a shift in how we think about longer form programming, transforming the audience dynamic from one of passive consumption to that of greater active involvement.
